Love/Hate

You stare endlessly at the cursor, the paper, the screen, the pen, or maybe that strange crack in the wall you swear looks like Ed Wood and nothing. All day you’ve set aside to do this with your muse happily on board, but once the day gets here…nothing! Just yesterday you both were geared up for this you promising no distractions her promising she’d show up. So here you sit for an hour, than two, than four, than well you give up and go play that game that’s been taunting you since you signed on. Midnight rolls around and you go to bed having to get up early for a class you’d just now remembered.
You say your prayers. Have a mini stroke before remembering that papers not due for another week. And slowly drift off to sleep.
BAM! It hits you the moment you’ve been waiting for. You flick on the light, wincing at the brightness of it, dig for paper and pen and begin writing. You forgive your muse for abandoning you in your time of need happy they’ve just decided to return. Ah the genius that’s flowing from pen to paper it’s mind boggling(that or you really need more sleep). When all is finish and you stare at aw at the five to ten pages you scribbled down you realize something. This wasn’t even the story you were working on! This is something completely new.
Why?! You collapse back on to your bed exhausted and just a little pissed. It’s closing in on two in the morning and now you’ve got this new story brewing in the back of your brain. Your muse is gone. Leaving you again to chase it’s fleeting dreams. Defeated you turn off the light tuck yourself back in and pray for a cancellation.
Where did it go?

Stress, school, work. This is why writers are self employed. You can’t deal with all this and not lose your sanity. Or your muse. It seems that even when you have a moment you’re too busy trying to relax or catch up to do anything else. So take a week or a month and truly go on vacation where you can think.
Fanfiction

I love fanfiction if done right what I don’t like is when people do not complete their work. If you are a FF writer here’s some advice. Before posting any story write at least half of it before publishing the first page. Now I don’t mean to publish the first half and then the second. No please take a few days to post one page after the other but do not write like you are the only one that cares if it’s finished. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen victim to a careless author who doesn’t seem to understand others are waiting with baited breath to read the next installment of their great work. You must have a back up plan in case you have to take a few weeks off or something comes up. Have those saved up pages in the back so that your readers aren’t left with just a few great words and no promise of more. Don’t think that you are the only one. Reward those faithful readers. Give them a reason to pass on your name or your stories. Finish what you start.
Music

For some music is required to bring out those elusive muses, but for others it’s more a distraction. Take time to figure out which works for you. For me music playing can go either way depending on how well I know it. New songs that I’m obsessed with will only distract me, but other songs I’ve heard a dozen times become background noise. If you need a song but can’t listen to it while writing do so before you sit down to write. Get the feeling in you and then sit down.
Finals

I am two days away from being finished with this semester. Several test and a hundred papers later I can finally get back to my work. Hopefully through out the break I’ll be able to put a sizable dent in my story. Although I don’t know what I’ll do with all this time I’m not stressing.
Book fair

Your heart races, your palms sweat, and your anticipation spikes. Yes you all know what I mean. The book fair is near. Today as I entered college I immediately spotted the tables of books. Already late for class, using Herculean strength, I ran passed it going to class. Which went by at a snails pace but once I was free I ran to my addiction.
The books were cheap and the pickings great. Six books for three dollars and I was in heaven. I could have gone for hours and spent more but I had little of both. As my favorite saying goes, “Who needs drugs? I go broke buying books.”
Why?

Do you ever wonder why? Do you ever sit there and question the reasons? I open up my book and search but never do I get an answer that makes complete sense. You search, you pry, you claw at the walls but never does the answer surface. It’s there I know it. I can feel it taunting me. I can hear its soft breathy whispers in my ear.
I will find it and take it.
Time

It’s been too long since I’ve posted last but what can you expect from a college student with a double major. At this moment all the time I have to give to my writing is when I’m not able to study. This would be a very small very chaotic six hour window that I have every other day at work. Although all together it may be no more than six minutes. I wouldn’t change that time for anything though given the constant interaction with unique and fascinating people. You don’t realize how diverse people are ’til you work with them.
Friends

I spent the weekend with my best friend and it kicked my brain into focus. My muse began to come out from her hiding place if only for just a moment. Letting go from school and life just to hang out with her and be myself helped me clear my head. With her I’m completely myself and she’s so honest that I have to be.
These are the friends that you need to stick with. If you have to pretend to be someone else; if you need to be a character with people get away from them. Being someone else is ok for a while but never forget who you are because in truth that’s who you’re writing for. That’s who you’re writing about.
Papers

I have so many papers due in all my classes I can barely think straight let alone write. My mind is running everywhere between writting a paper in English to what I need to write in Crime Law. I’m hoping that this week while I’m away on a mini vacation my mind will come to some type of peace.
When reality comes crashing down around you that the best time to escape. Get what needs to be done done and then slip into your own world. Nothing gets a writer’s mind bogged down more than too much information.
